I was in China for Chinese New Year (called "Spring Festival" in China). A local restaurant was converted into a 'chicken store'. I thought this meant something like KFC.

I was wrong. The chickens were live.

The chickens were running about on the floor of the temporarily closed restaurant.

Customers choose their preferred chicken. Here is a customer selecting hers.

They are then 'dispatched' on the sidewalk. You can see this 'dispatching bench' to the left in the first photograph.

The customer takes what he or she wants, and the rest is collected in a bucket, and probably sold to a farmer to use as fertilizer.

the chicken store open just before the SF 'cause SF is a veeeeery important festival for us Chinese. Greetin' ancestors, treatin' guests... we have good reasons to buy lots of food.
